Finfer named Co-Conference USA Hitter of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Marshall senior Sam Finfer was named Co-Conference USA Hitter of the Week, the league announced Monday. Finfer continued his stellar season this past weekend, as he led Marshall to its first Conference USA sweep of the season over the WKU Hilltoppers: 3-2 Friday, 10-9 Saturday, and 8-0 on Sunday.

The Bellevue, Wash., native finished 8-for-12 with five RBI, four runs scored, three doubles and two homers. Finfer had a two-run homer in the 10-9 win over the Hilltoppers on Saturday and followed with a solo homer in Sunday’s shutout win. He leads the Herd, C-USA and ranks seventh in the NCAA for home runs with 16. Finfer also leads Marshall this season in hits (62), doubles (17), RBI (48), total bases (127), slugging percentage (.713), on-base percentage (.415) and batting average (.348).

“Sam [Finfer] has been so fun to coach the past two years,” head coach Jeff Waggoner said. “We couldn’t be more excited for him to earn Co-Conference USA Hitter of the Week. He brings a professional work ethic to the field every day and it’s paying off for him. I’m proud of him as a person and as a team leader.”

Finfer became the first member of the Herd to win the weekly honor since Tyler Ratliff was selected on May 2, 2016. It is Finfer’s first weekly honor of his career. Finfer shares the honor with Louisiana Tech’s Raphael Gladu.

Marshall closes out its three-game season series with Ohio on Tuesday night at Bob Wren Stadium at 6 p.m. The Thundering Herd and Bobcats split the first two games earlier this year. It will be the 164th meeting between the teams, the most played series in Marshall baseball history. The series is split at 5-5 over the last 10 games played.
