Marshall signee Mary Lawman is WV Gatorade Player of the Year

HUNTINGTON – Marshall women’s soccer signee Mary Lawman has been named the Gatorade West Virginia Girls Soccer Player of the Year, as announced Monday morning. The 5-foot-10 senior midfielder and forward led the Winfield (W.Va.) Generals to a 22-2 record and the Class AA/A State Championship this past season.

“She’s aggressive and plays with a fierceness. She’s stellar in everything she does and I think that comes from her competitive spirit,” Marshall Women’s Soccer Head Coach Kevin Long said when the Herd signed Lawman. “We think that competitiveness will elevate our training and games right away.”

Lawman scored 34 goals and 19 assists as Winfield won its fourth straight state title, having won three straight in Class AAA before Winfield was reclassified as a Class AA school for this year and the next three seasons. The soccer titles in West Virginia are for Class AAA and a combination of Class AA and Class A mix of schools (AA-A) from the middle-sized and lowest enrollment high schools in the state.

She was named the 2016 Kanawha Valley Girls Soccer Player of the Year and First Team All-Kanawha Valley for four consecutive years. In club soccer, Lawman played for WVFC where she helped lead the team to a state championship in 2016 and made it to the semifinals in 2015. Lawman’s ability stretched beyond the pitch, as she also won two state championships in track and field, including the recent Class AA State Track & Field title in May, and played basketball for the Generals.

A four-time First Team All-State selection, Lawman was named the 2016 AA/A Player of the Year by the West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches Association. She concluded her prep soccer career with 120 goals and 46 assists.

Lawman is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta math honor society and has volunteered locally at an animal shelter and as a youth soccer coach. Her sister, sophomore Jayne Lawman is already at Marshall.

Lawman’s award is the fifth Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year award given to a Winfield student-athlete from the Generals’ girls soccer program. Jordan Pauley won in 2015-16, her sister Jayne Lawman won in both 2013-14 and 2014-15 and Haleigh Hoff won in 2011-12.
